Aaron Beck explains that psychological problems, such as anxiety and depression, may result from faulty patterns of thinking, known as cognitive distortions. These patterns of thinking can distort a person’s perception of reality and contribute to the development of negative thoughts and feelings of hopelessness.
Among these patterns are black-and-white thinking, overgeneralization, and exaggerating problems without scientific evidence. Psychotherapy aims to increase awareness of these obstacles so that individuals can develop more positive and realistic ways of thinking. Restructuring these thoughts also enables individuals to manage their emotions and behaviors in a healthier and more adaptive manner.
