Biography

Lazgin Barany is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English, College of Languages, at Nawroz University. He was previously affiliated with the University of Duhok. He holds an M.A. in Applied Linguistics and possesses approximately 50 years of teaching experience. Throughout his career, he has taught a wide range of subjects, including ESP, EFL, TESOL, academic writing, syntax, critical thinking, debate, and language skills at various institutions, including Mosul Technical Institute, Mosul University, the University of Duhok, DePauw University (USA), and Nawroz University. Barany has participated in numerous local and international academic conferences. He has authored and translated 7 books and published more than 30 research papers across various linguistic fields, with a primary focus on EFL, TESOL, and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). His main academic interest lies in developing EFL teaching to incorporate 21st-century educational skills, namely critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. He has supervised several M.A. students in TESOL and Applied Linguistics. In addition to TESOL, he is actively involved in Critical Discourse Analysis and Narrative Analysis research. Furthermore, Dr. Barany is dedicated to human rights issues, focusing on the rights of minorities, particularly the Yezidis, through the lens of language teaching. His research also explores the sociology and identity of the Kurdish people through the study of personal names.
