Biography

Seerwan Shakir Rashid (b. 1968, Akre, Duhok) is an accomplished visual artist and academic who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Baghdad and an MA in Art and Architecture from the University of Duhok.

Over his career, he has showcased his work in 21 solo and over 100 international joint exhibitions, and he is currently pioneering a novel signature style in 3D sculptural painting. A prolific intellectual, Seerwan has published the book "Kurdistan Between the Philosophy of Art and Contemporary Thought" alongside over 80 essays on art history and criticism, while also collaborating with global humanitarian organizations like the UNDP, Diakonia, and the ICRC.

Today, he teaches Freehand Drawing at Nawroz University's Department of Architectural Engineering and actively mentors the next generation of artists, leveraging modern artistic methods to evolve their intellectual and philosophical approaches to contemporary art.

  • The Contemporary Era (2014 – 2026): This period is characterized by a transition into full stylistic maturity, a deep focus on the concepts of memory, and intensive participation in major collective exhibitions that align with modernist plastic arts.
  • "Color Space" Painting: Most recent official artistic participation, featured at the Annual Exhibition of the Iraqi Plastic Artists Society at its headquarters in Baghdad (June – July 2026). The piece uses acrylic on canvas, with dimensions of 100x85cm.
  • "Relief Sculptures" Exhibition (Duhok, 2024): A remarkable experimental showcase where he utilized relief techniques on wall murals, blending painting with the tangible, tactile embodiment of heritage and antiquities.
  • "Music of Thoughts" Exhibition (Duhok, 2023): His 21st solo exhibition, in which he transformed silent, mental concepts into visual symphonies of gradient colors.
  • "Memories" Exhibition (Duhok, 2018): Hosted at Nawroz University, this exhibition focused on formulating artistic themes related to the passage of time and the accumulation of human experiences.
  • French Cultural Institute Exhibition (Erbil, 2014): A qualitative solo exhibition that reflected cultural openness toward Western arts.
  • International Expansion & The Dream Series (2003 – 2012): During this phase, the artist expanded onto the global stage, showcasing his work across Europe and the United States, coinciding with the co-founding of the "Contemporary Art Group" in the region.
  • Capital City Exhibitions (2006 – 2012): A series of consecutive solo exhibitions held in Tbilisi (Georgia, 2012), Herning (Denmark, 2011), Munich and Gütersloh (Germany, 2008 / 2010), and Detroit (USA, 2006).
  • "The Ninth World of Memories" Series (2009): The launch of his focused exploration into the psychological dimension of memory.
  • "Legend of the Fruitful Dream" Series (2003 – 2005): Held in Erbil and Duhok, this series was distinguished by a clear horizon line separating overcast skies from running waters on earth, representing the world of imagination.
  • The Early Beginnings & Foundation Era (1994 – 2001): This phase immediately followed his graduation from the College of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad.
  • "Outer Space of Nature" Series: This series spanned his 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 7th solo exhibitions, traveling across galleries in Duhok, Erbil, and Sulaymaniyah, and reaching Copenhagen in Denmark and Germany (1994 – 2001).
